When our clients talk to us about having custom stained glass installed in their homes or offices, their focus is usually on the design, and how incredible the finished windows will look in their homes. With two decades of custom stained glass experience, they trust us to make a beautiful product that will enhance their home’s appearance, style, and décor. But when it comes to stained glass installation, Austin TX customers don’t really think about that so much.

However, we consider ourselves to be stained glass installation experts. And we know that the installation is as important as the design and the pattern and the colors or types of glass chosen. The fact is, the installation is extremely important to the window or door’s durability: its ability to stand up to the elements for many decades to come.

When we hand-build one of our custom windows, we offer three different kinds of stained glass installation to Austin TX customers. The type of installation we’ll use depends on the location of the window, and the clients’ needs.

The first type is a temporary installation for a hanging panel. Instead of installing the stained glass into a window, the client has asked for something that can hang, usually from hooks and chains in the ceiling. It can easily be moved somewhere else in the home, and it can hang on a wall, in front of a larger window, or even in a pass through type of space or above a half wall in a home.

Stained glass installation, Austin TX discerning clients are discovering, is a process that definitely requires a fair amount of expertise.

The most common type of installation we do is directly into a window. In this scenario, the stained glass is installed on the inside of the existing pane of glass. This existing window pane forms a nice protective barrier for the stained glass. With this type of stained glass installation, Austin TX clients have a piece of art in their windows that will last for many generations, despite the fragility of glass.

Although moisture doesn’t really affect glass, it can affect the lead strips that the pieces are held together with, causing them to warp, crack, or become brittle. So if we are installing a stained glass window in a bathroom or the door to a steam room, we would place it in between two panels of clear glass for protection.
